5 Art Activities You Can Do As a Family

Jan 04, 2018

There’s no better time spent than time spent with family. If you’re looking for some art activities that you can do with your family, then this article is just for you! We’ve compiled a list of family-friendly art activities that parents and kids alike will love. Each of these ideas can be totally tailored to your preferences - the sky’s the limit!

1 - Make A House

Your little one will love making a tiny house! You can start by finding a shoe box or cutting a milk carton in half for the frame. Then, use construction paper to cover the inside. Once you’ve got the walls decorated a bit, you can make furniture using tiny objects or paper. When it’s time to add people to the mix, you can make them out of paper or use tiny dolls you’ve already got. Remember to use lots of imagination! You can even make a town of tiny houses for extra fun.

2 - Make Puppets

One great art activity for the entire family is to have each family member make his or her own puppet. These can be made from small brown paper bags or socks, and they can be as simple or as ornate as you want. Pom poms, yarn, and googly eyes can be added to give puppets a little more definition, or you can just use pencils to create a face on each puppet. Once everyone’s puppet is finished, it’s time for a family puppet show!

3 - Create Your Family Tree

Creating a family tree is always a great art activity for the entire family. The beautiful thing about this art project is that there are so many ways to do it! You could begin by drawing the trunk and branches of the tree, using green fingerprints for leaves. You could also use construction paper cutouts for the leaves. This project can be done in a very simple way as a rainy day activity, or you could set this up to be a cherished keepsake that adorns the walls!

4 - Imagine with Story Stones

Story stones are such a great way to get everyone’s imagination going! If your family enjoys telling stories, then you will enjoy story stones. Start out by collecting a few dozen rocks - at least 3cms in diameter is recommended. Then, gather old magazines and start going through them. Cut out interesting images - people, animals, and icons - that will fit on the rocks. Once you’ve collected enough images to cover the amount of rocks you’ve got, it’s time to put them in place. Use some clag and varnish or something similar to affix the images and seal them in place (make sure to go over the images, too). Once they’re dry, you can get started telling stories! Each family member takes turns choosing rocks and making up a part of the story. It’s fun for everyone!

5 - Build a Fairy Garden

Start by choosing a planter or finding a space suitable for a fairy garden. When it comes to choosing the items for your fairy garden, you’ve got plenty of choices. You can buy a fairy garden kit from your local Bunnings/Garden store, or you can go to an art store and buy miniature furniture. Use small plants, such as succulents and cacti, to adorn your garden. Once everything is in place, use glitter as fairy dust!

BONUS TIP - Try an Artventure lesson together!

Whilst Artventure is a trusted children's education resource for families worldwide, taking the time to complete your own artwork alongside your child can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Comparing each family members interpretation of the lessons gives each person an insight into the mind of the others and as many parents turn to Artventure because in their own words ''I cant even draw a stick figure'', they might even pick up some valuable skills themselves!

Each of these art activities are great ways to make memories with your family. Whether you’re looking for a rainy day activity or a keepsake, these art activities are great fun for adults and kids alike!
